Sunday, Jan. 10th (Nha Trang Day 2)

  • Woke up at 8:30am on the dot and headed upstairs for complimentary breakfast, included in the $6 per night cost of Mojzo Inn Hostel.
  • Spent some time catching up with friends and family back home and writing.
  • Took my motorbike to the mechanic to have 2 problems looked at: the destroyed ignition key mechanism (which happened on the road yesterday), and the loose foot pegs.
  • However, when I picked up the bike from storage to wheel it to the mechanic shop, a third problem became obvious: a big puddle of jet black oil on the tiled floor of the storage garage.
  • Thankfully, one of the hostel staff (who are all wonderful) walked with me to the mechanic shop to help explain the issues and negotiate a price.  One of the largest language barriers we have encountered so far is when dealing with mechanics (hand gestures can only go so far when it comes to steel and wheels) so this extra help was very welcome.
  • The mechanic agreed to fix everything for 250K VND ($11) and told me to come back in a few hours.
  • I decided to take a walk and explore the city a bit while Cory went to Pho Hong for some noodle soup.
  • Nha Trang has a reputation for being a bit touristy, so I wasn’t expecting much before we arrived, but the more I explored the more I fell in love with the city.
  • It reminds me of a mini Hong Kong, with pockets of modern brick and mortar juxtaposed against lush mountain backdrop in all directions.
  • I explored Hon Chong temple, which isn’t much more than a great hilltop view of beautiful Hon Chong bay, followed by Po Nagar, a Cham temple relic from 700 AD.  In doing so I walked through several local areas and came across Nha Trang’s public library as well as its university.
  • Returned home just in time to take advantage of the back to back free beer happy hours: 5-6pm at Mojzo Inn and 6-7pm at iHome.
  • Had the best Pho that we’ve had in ages at Pho Hong with Cory and an English couple that I met at iHome.
  • Cory called it an early night while I continued on to Why Not bar with a group from our hostel.
  • Played some pool and hung out before returning home just before 1am.
